Worked for 9s

Apple released iOS 27.0.1 on 28 September 2026, two weeks after iOS 27. This is a stability patch, not a feature drop. The headline fix targets Face ID failures that could freeze or restart the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The same build also repairs a camera color artifact on those models and a touchscreen freeze that can affect any iPhone running iOS 27.

This tutorial explains what the update actually changes, who should install it now, how to prepare, how to install it safely, and how to verify Face ID after the reboot. Follow the steps in order. Keep paragraphs short so you can scan this on a phone.

What the Update Fixes

Apple’s official notes list three issues. Understanding them helps you decide whether to update immediately.

Face ID restart bug: On iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, a failed Face ID attempt (often when unlocking a locked app, Passwords, Wallet, or a private Safari tab) could freeze the device and force a restart. Camera color artifact: A small number of 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max units showed color artifacts in 2x photos taken at f/1.48 under certain lighting. Unresponsive touchscreen: Opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time could make the display stop responding. This can affect all iOS 27 devices, not only the new Pros.

Face ID is Apple’s infrared face-authentication system. On the iPhone 18 Pro line it uses a new under-display TrueDepth setup. The reboot bug looked like hardware failure to many owners. Apple confirmed it is a software issue. iOS 27.0.1 is the fix.

Companion updates shipped the same day: iPadOS 27.0.1, visionOS 27.0.1, and iOS / iPadOS 26.7.1 for devices that stay on iOS 26.

What You Need An eligible iPhone on iOS 27 (iPhone 11 and later, including iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max and iPhone Duo) A stable Wi-Fi connection (cellular is possible but slower and less reliable) At least 20–30% battery, preferably plugged in Enough free storage for a ~1.2 GB download (size varies by model) An iCloud or computer backup completed before you tap Install Your device passcode (you will need it after the restart) Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Confirm your model and current version

Open Settings > General > About. Note iOS Version and Model Name.

If you already see 27.0.1, you are done. If you are still on iOS 26, you can install iOS 26.7.1 instead of jumping to 27 unless you want the new OS.

The Face ID restart and camera artifact fixes apply only to iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. The Control Center / Notification Center freeze fix applies more broadly.

Step 2: Back up before you install

Never skip this. A failed or interrupted update is rare, but a backup is the only safe rollback path.

iCloud backup: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes.

Computer backup: connect the iPhone to a Mac (Finder) or Windows PC (Apple Devices / iTunes), select the device, and choose Back Up Now. Encrypt the backup if you want Health and saved passwords included.

Step 3: Free space and charge the phone

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Delete large unused apps or offload videos if space is tight.

Plug the phone in. Apple recommends staying connected to power during install. Do not start an update at 5% battery on a train with weak Wi-Fi.

Step 4: Check the update over the air

Open Settings > General > Software Update.

Wait a few seconds. You should see iOS 27.0.1 with Apple’s short release notes. Read them. They match the three fixes listed above.

If nothing appears, pull down to refresh, reboot the phone, or wait. Staged rollouts sometimes delay the banner by a few hours.

Step 5: Install iOS 27.0.1

Tap Download and Install (or Update Now if the file is already downloaded). Enter your passcode when asked.

The phone will download, prepare, then restart. This can take 15–40 minutes depending on storage speed and network. Do not force-restart mid-install.

Optional: choose Update Tonight if you want the install after you sleep. Keep the phone charging and on Wi-Fi.

Step 6: Update from a computer if OTA fails

Use this path when Wi-Fi is unstable or the OTA download loops.

On a Mac with a recent macOS: connect the iPhone, open Finder, select the device, and click Check for Update then Download and Update.

On Windows: use the Apple Devices app (or iTunes on older setups). Keep the cable connected until the phone finishes restarting.

Advanced users can restore from an official IPSW in recovery mode. Only do that if Apple Support or a trusted guide walks you through DFU/recovery. A wrong IPSW bricks nothing if you use Apple’s signed file, but it will wipe the device unless you restore a backup afterward.

Step 7: Verify Face ID after the update

After the first reboot, unlock with your passcode. Then test Face ID in this order:

Lock the phone and unlock from the Lock Screen. Open a Face ID–protected app (Passwords, Wallet, banking, or a locked Notes folder). Open Safari private tabs if you protect them with Face ID. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and confirm Face ID is on. Try Reset Face ID only if setup still fails.

On iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max, a failed scan should no longer freeze the UI or trigger an unexpected restart. If it still does after 27.0.1, note the exact screen and contact Apple Support. That would be a residual or hardware case, not the original software bug.

Step 8: Check the other two fixes

Camera: on an 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max, take a 2x photo in mixed indoor light at the default wide aperture. Look for odd color blobs or fringing that you saw before. Most units never had this issue; the note said “a small number.”

Touchscreen: swipe Notification Center down and Control Center in quickly, one after the other. The display should stay responsive. If it locks up, force-restart once (volume up, volume down, hold side button) and retest.

Step 9: Confirm the build number

Return to Settings > General > About. Version should read 27.0.1. The build commonly reported for this release is 24A446.

You can also confirm from a Mac: connect the phone and check the software version in Finder.

text Copy Copied Settings → General → About iOS Version: 27.0.1 Build: 24A446 Who Should Update First Update now: iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max owners who saw Face ID freezes, restarts, “Face ID is Not Available,” or Require Attention glitches. Update now: Any iOS 27 user who hit an unresponsive screen after opening both Control Center and Notification Center. Update soon: Everyone else on iOS 27. Point releases like this are small and focused on reliability. Stay on iOS 26 if you prefer: Install iOS 26.7.1 for security fixes without moving to iOS 27 yet. Common Mistakes Skipping the backup. If the install hangs, you need a restore point. Updating on weak cellular data. Use Wi-Fi. A dropped download wastes time and battery. Assuming Face ID hardware is dead. The 18 Pro reboot pattern was a software bug. Update first, then test, then visit a store only if 27.0.1 does not help. Resetting Face ID too early. Test after the update. Reset only if enrollment or attention settings still fail. Force-restarting during “Preparing Update.” Wait. Interrupting that stage can leave the phone in a longer recovery loop. Ignoring storage warnings. Free several gigabytes before you start. Photos and offline maps are the usual blockers. Confusing this with a feature update. iOS 27.0.1 does not add Siri AI capabilities or new UI. Those arrived with iOS 27 on 14 September 2026. Troubleshooting

Update does not appear. Restart the iPhone. Toggle Airplane Mode on and off. Sign out and back into your Apple ID only as a last step. Wait a few hours if Apple is still staging the rollout in your region.

Download stuck at a percentage. Pause other large transfers. Forget and rejoin Wi-Fi. Delete the update under Storage if iOS offers that option, then retry.

Phone boot-loops after install. Connect to a computer and use Finder / Apple Devices to update or restore. Have your encrypted backup ready.

Face ID still fails after 27.0.1. Clean the display over the TrueDepth area. Remove thick cases or screen protectors that block the sensor. Retry enrollment. If the phone still restarts on a failed scan, collect screenshots and a timestamp and contact Apple. Document whether it happens on Lock Screen, in apps, or only with Require Attention enabled.

Touchscreen still freezes. Force restart. If it repeats only when both centers open together, note it and check for 27.0.2 later. That gesture bug was listed as fixed; a leftover case is uncommon.

Final Check

Use this short checklist after the restart:

About screen shows iOS 27.0.1 Lock Screen Face ID works A protected app unlocks with Face ID without a freeze No unexpected reboot after a failed scan Control Center and Notification Center can open close together iCloud or computer backup completed before the install

If every item is true, you have responded to the release correctly.

Summary

iOS 27.0.1 is a targeted bug-fix build. It stops iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max units from restarting when Face ID authentication fails, cleans up a rare 2x camera artifact on those models, and repairs a system-wide touch freeze when Notification Center and Control Center open together.

Back up, use Wi-Fi and power, install from Settings > General > Software Update, then verify Face ID on the Lock Screen and inside protected apps. Do not treat a pre-patch reboot as proof of a broken sensor until 27.0.1 is installed and retested.

Next steps: Keep automatic updates on if you want future 27.x patches without hunting for them. Watch Apple’s security page if you manage devices for work. If you support family phones, apply the same backup-then-install sequence on each iPhone 18 Pro first. For iPads and Vision Pro, install the matching 27.0.1 builds the same day using the same Settings path.
